Assignment Task

Background

The purpose of this task is to research and argue ways to improve the conditions for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to learn mathematics at school. You will also complete a reflection.

Your task

Prepare by engaging with the readings and other resources in the “Module 2: Improving mathematics education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander learners” folder. Weeks 6-7 and 10-11 will involve structured activities to help you complete this task gradually and with confidence. Your full engagement with available learning opportunities is encouraged.

Your report will have four sections (you can use sub-headings):

1. Apply critical theory to discuss the various challenges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander learners confront when they attend school. What are the historical, political and social issues that have led to “gaps” in educational access, opportunity and attainment, particularly in mathematics? Use secondary data sources, including statistics to support your argument.

2. You will have access to a deidentified community case study. We have compiled data sourced from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and Myschool websites, including local government area statistics about education and employment, and NAPLAN results for one local primary and one local secondary school. Analyze the data provided by applying what you have learned about numeracy and social justice.

a. What do you notice? Make statistical statements.

b. What do you wonder about? What educational challenges and opportunities does the data suggest?

3. Draw on coursework readings to suggest strategies that the case study schools and teachers can adopt to better align mathematics teaching and learning experiences with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students’ language, values and cultural practices.

4. Draw on the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers to prepare a reflective passage that discusses what you have learned about your own school education and yourself as a future teacher through completing Module 2 and this case study:

a. The strategies that you can adopt to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

b. What you can do to develop student numeracy as part of reconciliation and truth-telling activities.

c. The professional learning goals and opportunities that you have identified.
