The design process that we will be implementing this semester is a 3 stage process that is elaborated on in the lectures. No matter which field in engineering that you study, you will come across the design process in one form or another. Each field will alter or fine tune the process to best suit its needs, but the general steps are still there. As discussed in the lectures, the steps to the design process that we are addressing this semester are broken into three stages, as shown below:

1. Stage 1: Design
a. Understanding the problem (Determine the background and key stakeholders)
b. Defining the Design Criteria
c. Ideate a proposed design

2. Stage 2: Tendering Process
a. Obtain a builder to build the proposed design

3. Stage 3: Pitch
a. Scale Model and test
b. Pitch the idea

Understanding the problem means that you will be needing to understand the geographical, social, economic, political, and environmental aspects of the problem before attempting to create a solution to the problem. It is imperative that you understand the problem in its entirety prior to finding a solution in order to create the best fit solution for the stakeholders. It is very tempting to dive right in and create a solution starting from day 1, when you are given the problem statement. The foreseeable issues with this is that if you do not incorporate the criteria and the constraints of the stakeholders into the solution, then you will find that when you try to sell your idea to your stakeholders, they will most likely not want to invest into your product.
