Introduction

Part A - The Scienctific Process

The scientific method is useful in problem solving and decision-making in a wide variety of fields. In this assignment, you will demonstrate how to use the scientific method to make decisions and solve problems in your field of study or everyday life.
The problem has been identified for you.

"a report was received from the Goroka hospital that approximately 50% of the patients with kidney problems are employee of Coffee Industries within EHP. One of the main effects it has on their body is the increase in urine output over a 24 hour period. You want to find out the effect of cofee on urine output.

NOTE: Use the internet to research on the effect of coffee on the kidney and urine output to understand the topic before you do your assignment.
The Steps of the scientific process.

A. Observations

B. Questions

Students should ask many questions based on their observations. At least more than 5.

C. Hypothesis

Write one (1) hypothesis for a question that is of interest to you and you would like to investigate on. .. The hypothesis formulated must be based on or related to the questions given in (B). Note, the hypothesis must have IF and THEN in the statement.

D. Test the hypothesis

Develop a simple experiment to identify the effect of caffeine on urine output on UOG students. The procedure must be stated clearly.
Materials, number of participants etc

The student must develop an experiment to test his/her hypothesis. The procedures highlighted must be realistic, should give good results; whether positive or negative. He/she must indicate the type of experiment - quantitative, qualitative, and experimental, survey etc.

E. Possible Results/Outcome

The student must outline examples of positive results he/she would expect from the research
The student must outline examples of negative results he/she would expect from the research

F. Based on the results, what will they do next? Student must give very good recommendations  for their results; both the positive and negative results

(1) Positive results - Three (3) Recommendations

(2) Negative results - Three (3)

Experimental Plan

Skills

Hypothesizing, Initiating and planning, Performing and recording, Analyzing and interpreting Communicating results

1. After deciding which physiological reaction you want to measure, design an experiment that allows you to measure the effect of coffee.

2. Be sure to establish proper controls so you can compare your results before and after the ingestion of coffee.

3. Establish the amount of time required, and ask your teacher to approve your experimental design and to arrange for any equipment you may need. )

Checking the Plan

1. What are your dependents and independent variables?

2. What are your constants?

3. What will be your control?

Part of methodology

4. What will you measure and how?

5. How will you record and graph your data? - correct presentation, correct data.

Data and Observations results

Conduct your investigation and make your measurements. Graph your results and then enter the data in a summary table.

Analyze - Discussion Section

1. (a) Was the variable you investigated affected by coffee?

(b) If so, how was it affected?

2. Were your results consistent?

3. What factors of your population may have affected your results?
Conclude and Apply

4. What conclusions can you make about one physiological response to the intake of coffee?

5. Based on your results, predict what other measurable effects coffee would have on the human body.

Exploring Further

6. Using the Internet, find the results of various research studies that have explored the positive and negative effects of coffee. How might you account for the conflicting conclusions?

7. Referencing - Use APA Style

8. Project done and handed in on time

9. Participation with group (captain to report on that)
