Effect of Racism on First Nations and social development

Assignment Task

The purpose of the Background section is to provide the reader with an overview of current thinking on the topic. To do this, students will need to search for peer-reviewed literature on the topic and create a written critical review of the literature. The Background section should consider the ways that First Nations children’s and adolescents’ social/emotional development has been found to be affected by racism in the peer-reviewed literature. It is good to be specific, so you might consider:

• What social/emotional outcomes have studies found to be affected by racism exactly?
• What measures/materials have been used that demonstrate the effects found?
• What mechanisms are believed to underly the association between racism and these effects?
• Are there any particular sub-populations at increased risk of negative outcomes (e.g., children of particular age groups, SES groups, genders)? What is causing these groups to be at increased risk?
• Are there any protective factors that protect children and adolescents from negative social/emotional outcomes.
