Assessment Details

Case and roleplay review: Provide case notes (summary of interview), assessment and case plan based on the role play interview with Betty in class then write a critical reflection from the perspective of yourself as the social worker.

Part A: Review of Role Play

1. Explain the skills and strategies you used as the social worker including SOLER, active listening skills, communication skills, responding to content, feelings and meaning, paraphrasing, summarising and open questions - give examples of what you said

2. Reflect critically on your strength-based collaborative relationship-building as the social worker. What was significant to you? What challenged you? How might you use these learnings in future practice?

Part B: Case Planning

The case notes and case plan should include the following

1. Strength-based case notes from the interview as if you were documenting the case for your agency

2. An anti-oppressive strength-based contextual assessment of the client's situation

3. A plan for further work on this case.

Class Activity: Case Scenario Betty

Betty Miller is a 75-year-old widow who lives at home. She is about to return home after two weeks in hospital following a hip fracture sustained after a fall in her home. Following the fall, she spent a night on the floor of her home unable to move or reach a phone to call for help.

Although the rehabilitation team has organised a help alarm for Betty to wear at all times and planned a range of home improvements, Betty is anxious about returning home. Other members of the team have noted that Betty seems anxious not only about another fall but also about returning to living alone as she appears to be socially isolated.
