Assignment Task

Overview

The Assignment is based on a real-life scenario and hence would be in Problem-Based Learning (PBL) nature. Therefore, it involves deep learning, problem-solving, decision-making and investigative skills. It is expected that you explore, read and research relevant materials in addition to the lecture notes (available on VU Collaborate) and prescribed texts.

Task

In 2015, a 12-storey concrete-framed student accommodation building was constructed for Victoria University on Ballarat Road in Footscray Park across from the main campus. The site location and property boundary are attached at the end of this document.

Assuming the building is yet to be constructed, you are tasked with developing the site layout for the construction of the student accommodation building. This process will involve identifying, sizing and placing the temporary facilities needed for construction. Two site plans are required: one for the excavation/earthmoving stage of development and the second for the construction phase. Assume the building will feature a two-level underground car-park. All site plans must be scaled, computer generated drawings of either A4 or A3 size and attached in the Appendices of the technical report.

In order to develop the site plan relating to earthwork operations, the type and number of earthmoving machines must be determined. This is required to graphically depict logistics of machines within, and to and from, the site. Similarly, the type and number of cranes required for construction must also be determined and depicted in the site-plan. All machines must be selected from standard manufacturer catalogues. As site plans are naturally related to the construction process, it is expected that the technical report includes basic discussions of the major construction procedures in order to validate the selection and locating of the temporary facilitates. Full working for all calculations must be provided and all assumptions made clearly stated.
