Background Information

Therapeutic relationship is key to positive outcomes and is an essential component of mental health nursing and your role as a mental health nurse is to establish a positive trusting relationship with patients. Maintaining professional boundaries is also an integral part of an effective therapeutic relationship.

This essay requires you to critically examine and analyse contemporary mental health nursing issues in delivering better outcomes for mental health patients/consumers. You are required to utilise contemporary literature to support your analysis of concepts and aspects of therapeutic relationships.

Task

Reflect on a consumer you have worked with in the last 3 months in your mental health setting that you found challenging to communicate with. This may be related to their history, or the challenges associated with their diagnosis. Use of Peplau’s theory of interpersonal relationships in nursing to review your communication strategies. Ensure your workplace and consumer has been de-identified.

1) Explain your workplace (de-identified) to the reader and the challenging behaviours exhibited in your previous interactions with this consumer (ensure all personally identifiable information has been removed and clearly state that a pseudonym has been used). 2) Using Peplau’s “Theory of Interpersonal Relations in Nursing” explain how you would proceed through the 3 phrases of the nurse-patient relationship (orientation, working, termination) whilst nursing this consumer in your setting.

3) Use peer reviewed literature that is contemporary (between 5 to 10 years) old to support the communication strategies you would employ for this consumer and their carer in your mental health setting to improve outcomes.
