Assignment Task

Background

Communication issues can arise in any type of profession. One may have the knowledge to do the job well, but not necessarily the ability to effectively handle challenges when interacting with others. However, you are studying a communications-related course, so you are developing insights that would be valuable to share with others. Below are the instructions for creating your oral presentation assignment.

Steps

1. You have been hypothetically invited to give a short presentation to a specific audience group. You can choose either of the following two options for your target audience:

  • university students who are about to graduate from the same degree program you are currently studying; or
  • employees who are working in the same profession you intend to embark on once you graduate.

2. Conduct academic research into the three communication concepts listed below:

  • Semantic barriers
  • Self-disclosure
  • Productive conflict

You will briefly explain the three concepts to your audience, identify what problems or challenges are associated with each, and then provide specific strategies to help overcome or minimise the problems. You will need to cite and reference a minimum of five academic sources in your presentation. (More information about the research requirements is outlined further below.)

3. Tailor your content to suit your target audience. It should be clear to your audience group why your content is relevant and helpful for them in their current or future profession. Therefore, relate each of the concepts to the specific degree you are currently studying. For example, if you are studying psychology, you would connect the concepts to that profession, targeting either third-year psychology students or those already employed in that field.

4. Create a presentation that contains key points and images, plus a cohesive theme/colour scheme that will suit your target audience. There is no specific number of slides or images required but aim to have sufficient to retain audience interest while you are speaking.

5. The presentation should have a clear introduction, body and conclusion. There are set requirements for each of these sections, which are outlined in the Module 7 content and recording.

6. Record your presentation, using the key points on your slides to prompt what you are going to say. Deliver your content as if you really were speaking to your target audience (and not the marker). Therefore, don't refer to it as an 'assignment' during the presentation or on your title slide. (More information about the delivery style is outlined further below.)
