Highlights
Introduction
Depression impacts Australians over their lifetime (Batterham et al., 2021), leading to socioeconomic burdens and increased healthcare utilisation (Etzelmueller et al., 2020). Symptoms of depression include persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities, and feelings of worthlessness or guilt (Etzelmueller et al., 2020). Effective, non-pharmaceutical treatment for depression may be Cognitive Reminiscence Therapy (CRT).
Depression
Depression affects an estimated 300 million individuals worldwide (World Health Organization, 2017) and, in severe instances, it can result in self-harm and suicide (Liu et al., 2021). Consequently, there is a pressing need for cost-effective interventions aimed at reducing depression symptoms and increasing psychological well-being (Liu et al., 2021). Depression can be treated using pharmacological interventions; however, treatment can be costly and has been shown to have adverse side effects such as weight gain and increased risk for heart disease (Liu et al., 2021). Therefore, psychosocial interventions are increasingly favored due to their implementation of standardized operating procedures with replicable frameworks, minimal side effects, and demonstrated cost-effectiveness (Gil et al., 2019).
