Background

It was a thrilling finale where the match came to a tie in the closing seconds of regular time, and Johnathan Thurston kicked a golden point field goal to seal the victory. The motion of a football after it is kicked can be simulated using a computer. This task will demonstrate the use of computers to simulate mechanics. You will calculate and display the motion of an NRL football during a conversion kick.

Simulating a Conversion Kick

A conversion kick begins with the football in a stationary position on the ground. To attempt a kick, the football is given some velocity by the action of the player. The simulation will begin from the instant that the ball leaves contact with the player’s boot. In other words, the ball will have an initial velocity that will be provided as an input into the program. The motion of the ball is then controlled by the forces that act upon it. The main forces of interest are gravity and drag. A side view of the football field is shown in Figure 1. In this perspective, a kick is successful if it passes above the cross bar.

Task

Your task is to implement:

 A MATLAB function that takes as input the initial position and initial velocity of the ball, and simulates its motion. The function must graphically display the trajectory, and indicate whether the conversion kick was successful. (A successful kick must pass between the goal posts and above the crossbar.)

In a separate M-file, give at least two examples that show how to call your function. You should demonstrate a successful kick and an unsuccessful kick. To enable each example to be run independently, it is recommended that you use MATLAB’s cell mode (where blocks of code are separated by lines beginning with “%%”).
