Owing to the recent construction boom combined with historic low interest rate, there has been significant increase in the new development of residential premises. Several new residential suburbs being added in and around Brisbane and it is projected that this will lead to significant increase in the peak load levels in the QLD electricity grid. A group of power engineers are assigned a task of modeling the new network and perform several power system studies to ensure grid stability and reliability in the near future.
Please arrange a group of 3 (minimum) or 5 (maximum) students via blackboard. Following assumptions can be made to help in modeling new power system components:
Add as many buses in the base case as there are number of students in the group. Name and number of the new buses should be same as Students’ Last names and Student number. The load at each bus (in MW) should be sum of the digits of the student number.
Assuming that these load buses are located at different locations in Brisbane and surrounding suburbs, use google maps to determine the distance of these load buses to the QUT Bus and connected these load buses using transmission lines. Select appropriate voltage levels and transmission line parameters from the appendix of the text book.
1. Set up a new power flow model and comment on the choice of the voltage level of the transmission line and associated losses.
2. Perform the fault studies for SLG, DL, DLG and 3-phase bolted fault at all the new load buses and comment on the findings.
3. Set up an appropriate zone protection scheme for your power system and comment on their choice.
4. Perform transient stability studies stating the assumptions.
Engineers are required to use due diligence in modeling and representing the load centers and choose the appropriate transmission lines. They are required to produce up to 20 pages of report detailing the finding and make a 10 minute presentation vedio towards the end of the semester. The final Powerworld model should also be uploaded.
The final design project report may follow a given structure:
• The 20 page report should consist of executive summary, description of the design task and discussing the methodology of system modelling and appropriate references about the choice of data and information used in the project.
• The format of the report is Single column; 12 Font size and Times new Roman; IEEE type referencing style.
• Students working in groups may choose to append the report with appendix of data sheet and additional 10 pages of weekly reports demonstrating active collaborative among the group members.
