Big 5 Personality
The five-factor model of personality - often referred to as the Big Five - has an impressive body of research supporting the five basic personality dimensions underlying human behaviour (e.g., BenetMartínez, & John, 1998; Rammstedt, & John, 2007). According to Robbins et al (2017) these five dimensions are defined as follows:
- Extraversion: encapsulates your comfort level with social relationships. Higher scores on this measure indicate higher levels of extraversion, while lower scores indicate lower levels of extraversion (i.e., introversion). People with higher levels of extraversion tend to be more sociable, talkative, and assertive; they like to bounce ideas off other people; and they tend to derive their energy from social interactions. More introverted people tend to be more timid, quiet, and reserved and tend to feel recharged from time on their own.
- Agreeableness: reflects how much individuals adjust their behaviour to suit others. Higher scores on this measure suggest you are good-natured, cooperative, and trusting. Lower scores indicate you prefer having your say or way on issues.
- Conscientiousness: relates to the degree to which someone is responsible, dependable, persistent, and achievement-oriented. Higher scores indicate that you pursue fewer goals in a purposeful way; lower scores indicate that you are more easily distracted, pursue many goals, and are more hedonistic.
- Emotional stability: Emotional stability (often labelled by its converse, neuroticism) refers to an individual’s ability to withstand stress. Higher scores indicate a greater degree of emotional stability, that is, a tendency towards interpreting events in a positive way and feeling calm, secure, and self-confident. Lower scores indicate a lower degree of emotional stability and, hence, a tendency towards interpreting events in a negative way, and being more susceptible to feeling nervous, anxious, and depressed.
- Openness: relates to the degree to which someone is imaginative, artistically sensitive, and intellectual. Higher scores indicate you have a wide range of interests and a fascination with novelty and innovation; lower scores indicate you are more conventional and find comfort in the familiar.
