In 2001, Charles Handy published his book The Elephant and the Flea, in which he uses the metaphor of an elephant to refer to large established organizations that had traditionally provided the security of lifetime employment (reflecting on his early job experience with an established organization, namely: the Shell Royal Dutch Group). These organizations provided a stable and fairly predictable work environment from which one could plan the future trajectory for personal and family life. These types of organizations emerged in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, with the growth in commerce and the expansion of international markets. Large organizations with a large number of employees was the order of the day, with a range of companies, such as General Electric, IBM, General Motors, British Rail, Lloyds Bank, Woolworths Ltd and Shell, providing permanent full-time career positions.
