Highlights
Introduction
A balanced approach is a decision-making approach through which a teacher makes thoughtful decisions each day about the best way to help each child become a better reader and writer. A balanced approach requires and enables a teacher to reflect on what he or she is doing and to modify instruction daily, based on the needs of each individual learner. The modifications are drawn from a broad repertoire of strategies and sound understanding of children, learning and the theoretical underpinnings of these strategies. You will be required to draw on your research about the balanced approach and write an essay explaining this approach and create workstations based on the components of reading.
Description
For this assignment you will be required to investigate and write an essay about the balanced approach to reading and video record workstation activities that you have created. These two elements will be submitted in two separate parts on the LMS. Further details regarding each part can be found below.
Part A
1. Conduct research about the balanced approach using a variety of credible sources.
2. Your research should be presented in an essay of words.
3. Commence your essay with an appropriate introduction, structure paragraphs logically and end with a suitable conclusion.
4. Introduce your essay by stating the essence of this essay together with the resources you have consulted. In the second paragraph define the balanced approach to reading and discuss the benefits thereof, drawing on your research of this approach.
5. Discuss the five main components of reading as stated in the Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS), page 14. Explain how you would incorporate each of these components during a Grade 2 reading lesson of the text below. You have to make use of the text "The Clean Park".
6. Use examples from your teaching practice experiences and information from the learning content of this module to substantiate your discussion.
7. Remember to include a reference list of at least three references which include at least one textbook (our textbook may be used), one journal article (hint: use EBSCOHOST to find an article), and one website. Ensure that you reference according to the latest STADIO Referencing Guide. Check that you have correctly implemented your in-text referencing.
8. Read through your assignment and check that your grammar, language, and academic tone are appropriate and ensure that you write in logical paragraphs.
Part B
1. Design and create five workstation activities for a class of 30 learners (6 learners per group) and specify the grade.
2. Activities should focus on the five main components of reading (CAPS document, page 14) in an English Home Language classroom.
3. You must physically set up your 5 workstations and take a video thereof.
4. You can either use ready-made resources or make your own from everyday items / objects.
5. If you make use of ready-made worksheets from the Internet, you must reference them
