Highlights
Task:
For each transformation in your synthesis, find a corresponding literature example
1. It's worth using SciFinder to see if you can find the exact transformation you're looking for. It might not be out there, but it's worth a shot.
2. You need to match the transformation, but not necessarily the reagents. For example, you may have proposed an acid-catalyzed dehydration (alcohol → alkene) using sulfuric acid but may find a reference using a different reagent (like acid-exchange resin). This is fine! As long as you convert an alcohol to an alkene, you're set.
3. Pay attention to what/how this assignment is asking you to format the information for submission.
Grading for this assignment:
+1 point for embedding synthesis scheme.
+5 points for finding a set of references for each transformation:
+4 points for finding correct transformations.
+1 point for correct formatting.
+5 points for copying the procedures.
+3 points for copying the procedures (consistent with the references).
+1 point for following the submission guidelines.
+1 point for correct chemical formatting (super/subscripts, etc...)
Up to +4 points for commenting on the procedures.
Question 1)
Embed your synthesis scheme here:
( I think it just means my synthesis above)
Question 2)
Place citations for your references here. Follow these guidelines to format your citations:
1. Create a numbered list.
2. Name the reaction you found (or describe the transformation; "oxidation", "reduction", "dehydration", etc... are good labels) in bold text.
3. Include the title of the paper in italics, with a link to the source.
4. Use ChemDraw to create a reaction scheme for each step, or copy the relevant graphic from the paper. Embed that in an indented sublevel to your numbered list. Your complete submission should look like this:
Question 3)
Copy-and-paste the procedures for each step here. DO NOT include extra information; limit your selection to only the part of the experimental section that corresponds to each step of your synthesis. For readability, do this as a bulleted list. For example:
Question 4)
Comment on any special or unusual reaction requirements for your reactions here. Do they require more strict safety precautions, like a blast shield or extra protective equipment? Are there extreme temperatures involved? Do any reactions require specialized equipment, like a glovebox or unusual reaction vessels? Comment on how this might affect the feasibility of doing this reaction in the lab.
