Assignment Task

In this assignment, you are required to analyze single phase combustion problem in cylindrical chamber using computational method. The question is dealing with the non-premixed air fuel mixing, and reacts in a combustion chamber, which is commonly used for gas turbine in electrical power generation. The air fuel mixing flow in the combustion chamber is expected to be turbulent. In order to ensure the accountability of the computational results, you are requires to perform validation of your numerical models using experimental data available from the literatures. The work of the assignment consists of design enhancement, where a basic design is given and you are required to improve the design based on the criteria stated in the question.

Question 1
Consider the air and fuel are mixed and reacted in the combustion chamber as shown in figure 1 and 2. The detail dimensions of the combustion chamber can be obtained from the ANSYS files uploaded. The inlet and outlet of the combustion chamber of the gas turbine are usually connected to the compressor and turbine, which will not be analyzed in this question. The chamber has diameter of 20 cm with smaller inlet and outlet sections. You are required to improve the air fuel mixing by implementing various concepts and modifying various geometries to enhance its combustion efficiency. However, your designs are constrained by the following dimensions. All constraints must be strictly followed.

  • Combustion chamber length, ?? = 100 cm
  • Combustion chamber diameter or size, ?? = 20 cm
  • Inlet air and fuel diameter, ?? = 10 cm
  • Outlet product gas diameter, ?? = 10 cm
  • Combustion section length, ?? ≤ 100 cm

You are required to simulate the combustion process by using methane and propane as the fuel and considering both adiabatic and non-adiabatic case at various air fuel ratios, including the stoichiometric air fuel ratio. You are also required to change of operating conditions of the combustion chamber, such as operating pressure, air temperature, fuel temperature, surrounding temperature, and etc.

The performance of combustion chamber is measured by the completeness of combustion and emission composition. A complete combustion can be achieved by efficient air fuel mixing. Due to high temperature of combustion, nitrogen oxidation is required in the simulation. Therefore, the efficiency of the combustion chamber is measured by carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides emission. Apart from the stated performance parameters, you may also add other output parameters to analyze the effectiveness of combustion in more details.

In general, your tasks involves: (a) design of the combustion chamber, (b) apply adequate meshing on the model, (c) setup the numerical model using the stated conditions, (d) run the calculation using ANSYS Fluent or CFX, (e) validation the data from the literatures, (f) present and defend your work during the viva, and (g) write and submit your assignment report.
