SCENARIO 1: Nijam (he/him, 41) and his wife Grace (she/her, 38) came to Australia with their children Hassan (he/him, 17) and Miriam (she/her, 15) five years ago. The family fled Sudan eight years ago and came to Australia as ‘accepted’ refugees after spending three years in a UNHCR refugee camp in Uganda. The family received strong support upon their arrival from a local refugee support group and have good connections with other Sudanese families that they have met through their Mosque. Miriam settled quite well into primary school and now, in Year 10, has strong and accepting peer group and speaks excellent English. Hassan started high school when the family arrived and found the transition more difficult. He left school at the beginning of this year (Year 12) and has been working at a fruit and vegetable market. He is a good worker and well-liked by his employer and co-workers. His parents are unhappy that he left school and often say that they didn’t take all the risks they did in fleeing Sudan so that he can ‘just work in a fruit shop’. Hassan feels strongly that his parents favour Miriam and don’t ‘understand him’. He has begun staying out late and drinking with his work mates, which further upsets his parents. Nijam and Grace are still traumatised by their flight from Sudan, their time in the refugee camp in Uganda and by adjusting to living in Australia. They have become stricter in their response to Hassan and feel that he does not respect them, his parents, as he should. Hassan resents the limitations his parents are imposing on him and is threatening to move into a house with three of his work mates.Grace feels that the family is at a crisis point and has made an appointment for the family to see you, the social worker at the local community health centre.

SCENARIO 2: Emily (she/her, 36) has three children, Sarah (she/her, 16), David (he/him,14) and Lizzie (she/her, 11). Emily and the children’s father Mick (he/him, 38) separated ten years ago. The children have occasional contact with their father, speaking to himonce every few weeks and seeing him around twice a month. Three years ago, Emily metAdam (he/him, 29) and after a long period of seeing one another Adam moved in with Emily and the children six months ago. The children liked and accepted Adam until he moved in, but considerable tension now exists between the children and Adam. Adam has begun to exercise what he believes to be ‘reasonable authority’ with the children, delegating chores and setting curfews, bedtimes and punishments. Sarah in particular is very vocal about him not being her father and not being in a position to ‘boss her around’.Several arguments have occurred that have resulted in Adam and Sarah shouting at one another and Sarah threatening to leave the family home. David and Lizzie have told Emily they feel Adam is ‘mean’. Emily has been unable to convince Adam to ‘back off’ from being
a disciplinarian. Adam believes the children should show him and Emily more respect. The existing tensions are now threatening the relationship between Emily and Adam, and Emily has made an appointment for the whole family with you, the social worker at the local child and family centre.
 

SCENARIO 3: Jimmy (he/him) is a 15-year-old in year 10, with a strong group of friendsand an interest in maths, mechanics and economics. He is the son of Penny (she/her, 42) and Ed (he/him, deceased), and the older brother of Angela (she/her, 7). Penny’s familyare Wiradyuri, an Aboriginal nation that spans across a large area of what is now known as New South Wales, and the family currently lives on Country in Bathurst. Ed’s family are the Yuggera/Jagera people from what is now known as QueenslandFive years ago, Ed died suddenly of a heart attack at age 38. Ed was the primary income earner for the family. Penny was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) 18 months ago following periods of dizziness and fatigue. Penny has periods where she is able to work part-time with minimal symptoms, and other months where work is very difficult. Jimmy has taken on weekend work at the local shops to provide additional income for the family.Jimmy has struggled with school and maintaining his grades this year and has stopped playing soccer to ensure more time and energy for family and school. He is currently deciding whether he should continue at school or look for full time work once he has completed year 10, knowing that his mother’s progression of MS is unknown but that at some point he may be the main financial provider for Penny and Angela. On the advice of the careers advisor Jimmy has made an appointment to see you, the school social worker, to talk about his options around school and work after the school year is finished.
