Assignment

Task

Learning modules 1 and 2 on the subject site, along with tutorial sessions 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 explore the links between the principles and processes of caring science within the Clinical Reasoning Cycle (CRC). These principles and processes have then been applied using clinical scenarios.

Consider a case study of a care encounter that you have observed/read where the nurse engaged with empathy to the person receiving care:

  • For students who currently work in the healthand/or aged care industry you may choose a personal encounter of care that you experienced in your workplace.
  • ORFor students who have limited or no care encounters or industry experience, you may choose a personal experience as a patient or an observation of care of a family member from nurses in a health or aged care setting
  • ORAny students if they prefer can use the case study of Emma that is provided on the subject site.

Please note that case studies from personal experiences must be deidentified for confidentiality reasons. This assessment task asks you to draw on your chosen case study and respond to the topics below. Use your case study to respond to the following:

  1. Describe the nursing care observed when the nurse empathically engaged with the person receiving care.
  2. Identify and describe at least five (5) of the 10 Caritas Processes from Jean Watson’s theory of caring to your case study.
  3. Describe the strengths and challenges in this case study.
  4. Explain how the identified Caritas processes can be implemented with the Clinical Reasoning Cycle (CRC) to address the care needs of the person.
  5. Provide a brief reflection of your learning experience of the care encounter (written in first person).

The assessment should be presented in a scholarly format, although an introduction and conclusion are not required.

The assessment needs to be adequately supported by at least eight (8) current, reliable and purposeful peer reviewed and/or academic sources of information from journal articles, module readings, textbooks, and professional manuals.

Please refer to the 'Presentation' and 'Requirements' sections below for further information on how to write this assessment.

Brief Summary of Assessment Requirements

This assessment focuses on understanding and applying caring science principles within the Clinical Reasoning Cycle (CRC) through the analysis of an empathic nursing care encounter. Drawing on learning from Modules 1 and 2 and Tutorials 1–5, students are required to critically reflect on how empathy and caring theories guide nursing practice in real or simulated clinical contexts.

Key pointers to be covered in the assessment include:

  • Selection of an appropriate case study (personal workplace experience, patient/family observation, or the provided Emma case study), ensuring confidentiality and de-identification
  • Description of empathic nursing care demonstrated during the care encounter
  • Identification and explanation of at least five (5) Caritas Processes from Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring
  • Analysis of strengths and challenges evident in the care encounter
  • Explanation of how the selected Caritas Processes integrate with the Clinical Reasoning Cycle (CRC) to meet patient care needs
  • A first-person reflective paragraph on the learning experience
  • Use of a scholarly writing style (no introduction or conclusion required)
  • Integration of at least eight (8) current, credible academic sources

Academic Mentor’s Step-by-Step Approach

The academic mentor guided the student through a structured and supportive process to ensure clarity, critical depth, and alignment with assessment criteria.

Step 1: Understanding the Task and Learning Outcomes

The mentor first explained the purpose of the assessment—linking caring science theory with clinical reasoning and reflective practice. The marking criteria and expectations for scholarly writing were reviewed in detail.

Step 2: Case Study Selection and De-identification

The student was supported in selecting an appropriate care encounter relevant to their experience level. Clear guidance was provided on maintaining confidentiality by removing all identifying details.

Step 3: Describing Empathic Nursing Care

The mentor helped the student clearly describe observable nursing actions demonstrating empathy, such as communication style, emotional support, and patient-centered decision-making.

Step 4: Identifying Relevant Caritas Processes

Together, the mentor and student identified five suitable Caritas Processes from Watson’s theory. Each process was briefly explained and directly linked to actions observed in the case study.

Step 5: Strengths and Challenges Analysis

The mentor guided the student to critically evaluate both positive aspects of care and any challenges or limitations, encouraging balanced and reflective academic discussion.

Step 6: Integrating Caritas Processes with the CRC

The student was shown how to logically map the selected Caritas Processes onto the stages of the Clinical Reasoning Cycle, demonstrating how caring theory informs assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care.

Step 7: Reflective Learning Component

The mentor assisted the student in writing a concise first-person reflection, focusing on personal learning, professional growth, and insights gained from the care encounter.

Step 8: Academic Support and Referencing

Support was provided in sourcing current, peer-reviewed literature and integrating evidence appropriately to support arguments, ensuring correct academic tone and referencing.
