1.4 Research Problem
Regardless of the sector, the human resource remains a key ingredient for organisational performance. As such, many organisations envision creating an environment where employees give their very best and remain loyal to the organisation even in challenging times. However, despite having this earnest desire and the resources invested to realize it, employee engagement in organisations remains. According to the Gallup (2013, p. 7) study, “only 13% of employees are engaged in their jobs, while 63% are not engaged and 24% are actively disengaged globally”. This indicates that employees with emotions invested and absorbed into value creation for the organisation on a daily basis are only 13%. Based on this report, the global employee engagement crisis is apparent and this could have serious and potentially lasting repercussions on organisational performance as well as the national and the global economy. For South Africa, like other emerging economies, the number of disengaged employees outnumber engaged employees with the share of engaged, not engaged and actively disengaged employees being 9%, 46% and 45% respectively (Gallup, 2013).
Despite being one of the countries with a well-developed pharmaceutical sector in Africa, the South African pharmaceutical sector is exposed to the same movement of professionals out of the market into other fields as well as outside the country. This poses a huge challenge on the quality of service provided by the industry with respect to the development, manufacture and distribution of the much-needed medicines for effective healthcare delivery. As such, employee engagement is a vital factor among employees in the sector, like in any other sector, due to its impact on the quality of medicines, healthcare delivery and patient safety. The starting point is to understand the factors that drive the engagement of employees in the sector. Previous studies have taken a generic approach on understanding work engagements among healthcare-related staff in South Africa and how it relates to commitment (such as Beukes & Botha, 2013) and the relationship between work engagement and organisational citizenship amongst nurses (see Herholdt, 2015). However, they do not assess the factors that lead to engagement.
Acino Health Care South-Africa is a Swiss-based pharmaceutical company of at established in South Africa in July 2017 employee engagement is among one of the main objectives of Acino Health Care South Africa (Acino South Africa, 2018). This study, therefore, proposes to cover that gap by creating an understanding of the key factors that lead to the engagement of employees, particularly in Acino South Africa. This may aid managements in the industry players to address the issues and establish opportunities for their employees so that they are adequately engaged thereby resulting in commitment and improved organisational performance.
