DESIGN BRIEF 

This component concerns the design of a multi-storey loadbearing blockwork and timber annex building.  The annex is nominally up to 4 stories high and has cavity brick/block external wall, with timber floors, beams and internal posts.  The roof consists of a steel canopy and raised seam zinc panels.  Balconies will be primarily glass and the south facing wall will be fully glazed having minimal structural elements. 

The structural layout of the walls and floors repeats at each level, so ensuring a stable and robust structure.  The walls resist the overturning forces on the building. 
The annex requires the design for overall stability, axial and eccentric compressive loads, lateral strength of axially loaded walls due to wind forces, flexural and shear strength including deflection and sizing of a glazed wall system. 

Critical Aims 
To create a balance between social, ecological and architectural excellence, with low energy design.  Glazing to south façade to ensure maximum solar gain in the winter.  Courtyard glazing allows maximum solar penetration deep into the annex.  Louvers control solar gain in the summer.
