What?
As an engineer, when undertaking a project, it is your responsibility to consider not only the technical aspects of the project but also the non-technical aspects. Large-scale projects such as the Panama Canal (Cadbury, 2004) require extensive planning, designing, teamwork, communication and research in order to be executed correctly. Additionally, due to their size, they often have the possibility to have large and potentially devastating effects on the environment, community, economy, and local and global politics. Therefore, modern engineers are required to consider and account for these factors, as well as the technical designing and construction of the project, in order to try and achieve the most effective, efficient, and usable structure.

So what?
During the designing and construction of the Panama Canal, there were numerous stakeholders involved. Some of the most notable include, De Lesseps, all the other designers/engineers involved, the investors who sponsored the canal, and the workers who labored to build the canal. As for De Lesseps, his involvement as a stakeholder would not be much different in modern times compared to the 1800s and 1900s. He was the mastermind of the Canal, the Project Manager. All mistakes and unaccounted for accidents fall back on him, as it is his responsibility to constantly ensure that every facet of the project is going to plan and that every individual party involved is correctly doing their job to ensure the success of the project. The only difference between De Lesseps involvement in the 19th Century, and if he were to be designing the Canal now, is that he would be held much more accountable for his actions and for his lack of planning. The repercussions of a project like this in a modern society would be devastating, as it would not only help to ruin an already unbalanced economy, but it would also destroy a unique and thriving environment and have an almost unparalleled social impact due to the numerous injuries, illnesses, and deaths. Investors’ involvement would not vary much either, as they would still lose their money, and the surrounding economy could still be greatly affected. There is a chance for these investors to try to regain their money by using the company; however, in a large-scale operation such as this, it is unlikely. This is because many other stakeholders would most likely lose their money and want to sue, and the company most likely would be having financial difficulty and be unable to re-pay all investors. In comparison, the involvement and effects of the workers would be considerably different. In modern times, there have been certain national and international standards put in place to not only help ensure the success of the project but to also help protect all involved parties. One key example of this is the Work Health and Safety Act 2011. According to this legislation, every member of the workforce has the responsibility to maintain and improve the safety of his or her own workplace. However, if the risk is too high, workers have the right to refuse to enter the worksite to ensure their personal safety.

What else?
Engineers are often innovating and introducing new ideas and methods to achieve something. These new methods may be quicker, safer, and more cost-effective or just all-around more efficient; either way, innovation is an important part of being an engineer. However, when working with other involved parties, their views and opinions must be considered in the innovation process. These stakeholders’ opinions can often point out flaws in a new method or processor can coincide with a social, political or environmental area. In the case of the Panama Canal, many innovative methods of construction would have been discarded had the stakeholder's views been taken into account. Many of these processes adversely affected the labors who were hired to build the canal, as they not only added work, time and cost but also heightened the risk of danger.

What now?
Through reflection, it is evident that the role of a professional engineer has changed since the Panama Canal. During that time, the main focus of an engineering project was the actual construction of the project, the completion of the structure. Social, economic and environmental effects were often not considered. In the case of the Panama Canal, not only were they unapologetic with the removal treatment of the surrounding flora, but they also did not consider the social impacts that the labours would encounter, such as loss of morale due to constant failure, loss of families and friends due to death, and illness and injury due to unhealthy and unsafe living conditions. In comparison, in modern times it is a vital part of an engineer’s job description to consider all of these factors in equal parts as it has been proven that they all play a significant role in the successful completion of a project. As a professional engineer in the 21st century, one of your duties is to guarantee the safety and protection of the surrounding community and environment, as well as all parties involved in the project.

In Australian Engineering Practice, you are required to complete short writing tasks each week. These writing tasks are not meant to be just a regurgitation of what has been said in the book. They should help you to clarify your thoughts about what you are reading and importantly, you should think about how what you have read relates to YOU, to your experiences, your past performance and how you might improve your performance in the future.
When you are writing reflectively, think about:
1. What? – Briefly describe your topic or event in no more than two sentences.
2. So what? – Why is this relevant, what did you learn? This should be the largest section.
3. What else? – Have you experienced similar events within or outside of the course? What can you relate this experience to so you can broaden your understanding?
4. What now? – Now that you have learned something how will you apply this knowledge or skill?

Examples:
In the following examples, the level of reflection is bolded in square parentheses based on the previous reflection questions. These notations should not appear in your reflections as they are just shown to explain the process of reflective writing. Diary style writing typically only covers what happened which cannot be used as learning evidence. You should strive to achieve a higher level.
