Welcome to this third year, first semester module. This is a 12-credit module, which implies  that you will need approximately 120 hours of study to complete it successfully.  

The content of the module focuses on English syntax, the role of fluency in reading development, the importance of automaticity and fluency for reading connected text, tasks used for building fluency in component skills of reading, identifying, observing, and practicing fluency-building techniques. In the literature section, the focus is on the elements of poetic language, forms and types of poetry, poetry and the teaching of reading, integrating historical literature, biography and cultural responsiveness, and the value of biography for children. 

The purpose of the module is to ensure that students are knowledgeable about English syntax and how it relates to vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension; to explain and illustrate why and how fluency in component reading skills leads to a fluent reading of the text. Various types of children’s literature, such as traditional literature, poetry, historical fiction, and biographies are discussed in order to ensure exposure and integrated knowledge of these types in classroom practice, and the service-learning project continues to bridge theory and practice (in the classroom and community). 

Assignment 1  

Section A: Literature  

The literature-component of ENFF311 is based on traditional literature, poetry, historical fiction, and  biographies. Please refer to the “Legends and Myths” in your reader for ENFF311. You can choose any  one of the five legends or myths listed (Ghost of Uniondale; The Ghost at Cape Town Castle; Tokoloshe;  Rain Queen of Modjadjiskloof; or Outa Lappies). After familiarising yourself with the content of the  legend/myth, do the following: 

1. Write the text into a child-friendly version using syntax, punctuation and word choices carefully

2. Explain your choice of words and the syntax and semantics of your writing. 

3. Record yourself where you read the text fluently using dramatisation techniques, prosody and the  correct pronunciation of the text. This recording should be submitted with the final PDF assignment that you submit (thus you will submit one sound clip and one PDF-document as your  assignment) 

4. Answer the following questions: 

4.1. What guidelines can I follow to select myths/legends for my classroom?

4.2. What type of myths/legends should be excluded from the selection, and why? 

4.3. How do I ensure the learners in my classroom understand the difference between fiction and non-fiction? 

Section B: Reflective journal entries  

You will be required to submit a reflective journal entry as part of the requirements for the compilation of your final participation mark. You can also make mind maps or use any other form of  graphic representation if you so wish. Where possible, use examples that you base your reflection on.  A good guideline to follow with regard to the length of the reflection is that it should be between 4-5  pages in length (text) and extra pages for images/pictures. Remember to add a reference list if you used other sources. . Please remember that a reflection is not just a list of facts but a critical reflection  (meaning-making) discussion of your thoughts.

PART 1: Technical questions 

Refer to the poem “Wavin’ Flag” uploaded onto eFundi and answer the following short questions  about the poem, only write the answer as this is the initial questions for the reflective entry: 1. What is the type of rhyme used in this poem and what is the characteristics of such rhyming  technique? 

2. Write down 2 alliteration phrases from the poem. 

3. Identify a metaphor used in this poem. Explain the metaphor. 

4. Write down all the similes used in the poem. 

5. What is poetic freedom and how is it used in this poem?  

6. What do you think is the purpose of the lack of punctuation marks used in poem? 

PART 2: Reflective entry 

Refer to the poem again and answer the following questions in essay format: 1. What do you think is the underlying theme of the poem? Elaborate on your answer. (100-150  words).

2. The last six verses of the poem, except for one verse, is repetition of the same words. Why do you  think these verses are repeated? Elaborate on your answer (200-250 words). 

3. Analyse the poem’s meaning in terms of social justice, power-structures and poverty. For this  question do some research on the origin of the poem. Relate the social issues of the poem to the  South-African context. (350-400 words). 

4. Reflect on how you would explain this poem to Gr 3-learners. (150-200 words) 5. Reflect on the significance and opportunities of using poetry in the Language classroom as tool to  address social issues. (300-350 words). 

6. Write down 8-10 possible guidelines for Language teachers when selecting protest poetry for their  classroom. (150-200 words).
