Highlights
OVERVIEW:
In this assignment, you will write a comparative analysis OR a cause-effect analysis on a topic of your choosing, using the evidence-based approach and strategies discussed in the lesson. Topics must be technical in nature and ideally related to your particular field of study. See pp.2-3 of this document for topic ideas and examples.
• You must use concrete, researched evidence and draw a definitive conclusion. Refer to lesson materials for guidance on organizing your report’s content (Week #9 and #10).
• Include a cover letter addressed to your teacher which will serve as a short executive summary (summarizing your approach and main findings). See the example letter provided.
• Your report must include a title page, page numbers, a descriptive title, and appropriate use of headings within the report to organize the contents. See the example title page provided.
OPTION #1: Comparative Analysis
This type of report will answer the question: Is X a better choice than Y in a specific circumstance or for a specific purpose?
Your report must include an introduction that outlines the circumstances under which you are comparing the items and a statement of your final recommendation. In the report body, present the details of your analysis in order to support your choice. Emphasize the recommendation in the conclusion.
• For example: Imagine you are conducting a comparison of two types of roofing products for a homeowner who lives in a very hot climate; the introduction needs to introduce the hot climate as a consideration for builders and why the heat creates a challenge; the report will clearly recommend one roofing product over another, with an explanation.
OPTION #2: Cause-Effect Analysis
This type of report will provide proof of a trend and then discuss the reasons why it is occurring (causes). You will also touch on how this trend/condition/issue is impacting its respective industry, a specific group within society, or society at large.
• For example: Imagine you are conducting an analysis to explain the reason(s) behind the recent increase in the number of “green” roofs in urban centres. You’ll provide proof that there are, in fact, more green roofs in urban centres now than there were 10 years ago (for instance). You will focus your discussion on why green roofs have grown in popularity (causes), and conclude the report by mentioning the effects of this trend.
Comparison Analysis: Choose a technical subject matter (ideally related to construction, engineering, or architecture, but you could look into other technical subjects as well). Below are some example topics that you could use:
• tar shingle vs. clay vs. metal roofing for a particular climate (could compare all three or choose the best two options to compare)
• tankless vs. standard gas water heaters
• pressure treated vs. cedar for a specific exterior application
• spray foam insulation vs. rigid foam board insulation vs. fibreglass ‘batt’ insulation • wood deck vs. stone patio for highly trafficked outdoor living areas
• stucco vs. brick for home/building exterior
• Linoleum vs. ceramic tile in basement applications
• MDF vs. solid wood vs. plywood/engineered wood for cabinets
• naturally aspirated car engines vs. turbocharged engines.
