Purpose

This assessment allows students to demonstrate they understand the fundamental engineering science covered in this course, in-part meeting course objectives 5 and 6. In a normal semester of operation - this is achieved by requiring each student to sit (what normally would be) a 2 hour open examination, consisting of a series of questions of increasing difficulty.

Requirements

This Online (final) Exam will be equivalent to an open exam. This means that during the assessment students may access any study materials, texts, notes, worked problems etc that they wish. The examiner has been encouraging students all semester to prepare their own equation sheet. Using such an equation sheet will save you time searching the textbook. NO equation sheet will be provided in the exam.

A basic scientific calculator is required to complete the examination.

The format and level of difficulty of the exam is the same as previous semesters. (see past papers provided) Students must attempt the first three Sections of the Quiz and choose to attempt EITHER Section 4 or Section 5. The types of questions will be similar to past papers, getting harder towards the end.

To complete the online exam in this course the student is expected to write down their working on their own paper (in ink or dark pencil), enter the answer for each question into the online exam, scan their working to a pdf file and submit the scanned file before their 3 hr assessment window closes.

Students will be expected to record their working on paper to 5 significant figures and then enter their numeric answer rounded to 4 significant figures. If the numeric Answer is correct to within 3 significant figures, then full marks will be awarded. If the numeric answer is incorrect then part marks will be awarded for correct steps shown in the student's working. Hence it is important that the scan of the working is readable.

The instructions given in the practice exam will be the same as for the final online exam. The practice exam will present just a few parts of questions, similar in style to those in the Final Online Exam. The practice exam is provided so students can practice the steps required to print off the assessment, calculate and enter a few answers and scan and upload their working. The practice assessment is essential for students to test the process and ensure their computer set up is adequate etc.
