Highlights
Engineering Assessment Task
Activity 1 is to be completed within your team.
You should discuss with your team and facilitator the different energy supply options and configurations for the energy component; a study site for the evaluation of your concept design using historical climate data; and a timeline for the completion of activities.
• You should decide amongst your team members who will focus on what technology option for the energy component. Each team member will be focusing on a different technology option – these may be a ‘hybrid’ of different energy supply options. Each team member is required to evaluate only one of these options. The option you select will form the basis of your conceptual design in Activity 4.
• Using your statistical evaluation (summary) of your study sitesin Assignment 2, in consultation with your team, select a site as the basis of your team concept design and evaluation. All team members will use this site for concept development and evaluation.

• You should also decide amongst your team on deadlines where you will share your conceptual designs for the water and energy components. This sharing of information is necessary for
Activity 3 and Activity 5 below.
Activity 2 is to be completed individually.
• Using the historical rainfall data for your team site and the engineering model that has been provided, develop a conceptual design to satisfy the water component of the ‘water and energy package’. This should be completed individually.
• You should document your design at a conceptual level (i.e. detailed engineering design and calculations are not required). However, you should detail selection of critical components of your design (you may include any specifications and data sheets as an appendix). You should produce some concept drawings to illustrate your design.
• You should perform any calculations and document where needed to demonstrate that the requirements and constraints are satisfied (e.g. concept drawings).
Activity 3 is to be completed within your team.
Evaluate your conceptual design against those of your team members by referring to the final design brief and requirements (that has been provided at the beginning of this assignment). Within your team you should make a justified and documented decision on the most viable concept design for the water component according to the final design brief and requirements.
Activity 4 is to be completed individually.
• Using the historical climate data (for your team site) and the engineering model that has been provided, produce a conceptual design of the energy component of the ‘water and energy package’. You will develop a concept design based on the technology option that you have selected in Activity 1.
• You should document your design at a conceptual level (i.e. detailed engineering design and calculations are not required). However, you should identify possible options for the more critical components of your design (you may include any specifications and data sheets as an appendix). You should produce some concept drawings to illustrate your design and key features. Storage of energy should be considered in this stage to ensure that the mandatory requirements of the energy component are met. This should be completed individually.
• Perform any calculations that are needed and document where necessary to demonstrate that the requirements and constraints are satisfied (e.g. concept drawings). This should be completed individually.

Activity 5
• Evaluate your conceptual design for the energy component against those of your team members by referring to the final design brief and requirements (that has been provided at the beginning of this assignment). Within your team you should make a justified and documented decision on the most viable concept design for the energy component according to the final design brief and requirements.
Activity 6 is to be completed individually.
• Activity 6 is a Self-Review and Critiquing activity. Analyse your own Final Report and team work according to the marking scheme. Highlight the areas that you feel are done well, and areas that you feel need improvement. This is to be completed in the provided spreadsheet and submitted with your report.

Final Report
The final report will form the basis of this assessment. Your report should be completed individually and submitted individually. The contribution from preliminary report will not be reassessed. You can use the numbered sections below as a guide to the structure and format of your final report.
1. Executive Summary
• Prepare an executive summary for your report that briefly summarises the background and problem, the purpose of the report, the methods and criteria that were used in your evaluation, and your final decisions and recommendations.
2. Introduction
• Prepare an introduction for this report. You may modify your introduction from the preliminary report.
3. Any relevant sections of your preliminary report (e.g. background research) and the revised requirements provided by the examiner / facilitator should be included here to help complete this report. These will not be reassessed.
4. Concept design - Water
• The conceptual design that you have developed in Activity 2 should be presented here. Be sure to include all concept diagrams and illustrations, calculations and estimates (relating to the design criteria) and relevant plots (e.g. showing water storage).
• The concept designs of your team members should be included in the ‘Appendices’ document.
5. Concept design - Energy
• The conceptual design that you have developed in Activity 4 should be presented here. Be sure to include all concept diagrams and illustrations, calculations and estimates (relating to the design criteria) and relevant plots (e.g. showing energy storage).
• The concept designs of your team members should be included in the ‘Appendices’ document
6. Final concept and evaluation
• Your final assessment and evaluation of your team’s concept designs (Activity 3 and Activity 5) should be included here, and a final decision on a suitable concept design should be made.
Your decisions should be well documented and justified.
ENG1004 Engineering Problem Solving Principles - Team Report
• Conclude your report and provide some final recommendations to the client. For example, if you do not consider the concept to be feasible, you might like to consider any factors in the design of the TCS that have contributed to this. Could the initial design requirements and constraints be changed or addressed in other ways to support another iteration? Are there any limitations or assumptions made in developing your proposal?
Team Work
• The team facilitator will assess each student’s contribution to teamwork by the quantity, quality and regularity of forum postings, according to the activities described above. Discussions and work held in other locations need to be posted in your team forum to gain
the full marks.
Self-Review
• Analyse your own Final Report and team work according to the marking scheme (in the provided Self-Review spreadsheet). Highlight the areas that you feel are done well, and areas that you feel need improvement. This is to be completed in the provided spreadsheet and submitted with your report.
