Task 1 - Design a reactor to meet the above specifications and cover the following aspects:
1) Description of the process: Theoretical background and reactor choice.
2) Evaluate the conversion of ethanal.
3) Determine the reactor volume using the design equation.
4) Detailed sketch of the reactor.
5) Mechanical design and overall reactor costing.

Task 2 – Write a MATLAB program(s) to:
1) Compute the reactor volume for any given value of ethanal conversion using numerical integration of the design equation. Use one of the methods covered in the lectures and justify your choice of method and integration step. Implement it as a MATLAB function.

2) Plot the numerically computed reactor volume versus ethanal conversion in the range from 0 to 1.0 – 0.0a (where a is the digit from your group number).

3) Determine the value of ethanal conversion corresponding to a reactor volume of 1.a m3 by solving the equation using the bisection method. Use the plot from (2) to identify a subinterval containing the root and choose a reasonable value of the tolerance (provide a justification for it). Report the root and the number of bisection iterations.

Task 3 – The above reaction can be part of ethanol-induced methanogenesis in bacteria. Design a bioreactor to run the reaction highlighting differences from a chemical reactor:
1) Describe the main considerations in the design of the bioprocess and justify reactor choice. Compare with that in Task 1.
2) Derive a formula to compute the volume of the bioreactor employing appropriate kinetics and, based on this equation, discuss the relationship between the volume of the reactor, yield and production rate including the potential effect of limiting factors.
3) Describe the mechanical design and operation of the bioreactor.
