The following question is COMPULSORY. 

Question 1: PERSUASIVE PROSE  

Read the extract from President Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation Address (SONA),  delivered to parliament on 7 February 2019.  

NB: In this SONA, President Ramaphosa’s aim is to urge South Africans to celebrate freedom and democracy on the 25th anniversary of South Africa’s independence. He also appeals to South Africans to hold on to their fight for a free, just, and equal, but diverse society. 

Now write an essay of about 1 000 words in which you critically analyze the text.  

Your analysis should pay particular attention to the specific linguistic strategies and features that are used in the text. Pay attention to the following points to ensure that  you: 

• demonstrate your knowledge of persuasive prose techniques; • provide textual evidence for the claims/assertions you make in your  analysis; and 

• write your response in an essay in which you present your ideas in a clear,  concise, grammatically appropriate, logical, and sequential way. 

As South Africans, we will have to ask ourselves whether we have realized the promise of our nation’s birth.  

We must spend this year, the 25th anniversary of our freedom, asking ourselves whether we have built a society in which all South Africans equally and without exception enjoy their inalienable rights to life, dignity, and liberty.  

Have we built a society where the injustices of the past no longer define the lives of the present?  

We must use this time to reflect on the progress we have made, the challenges we have encountered, the setbacks we have suffered, and the mistakes we have committed.  

A year ago, we set out on a path of growth and renewal. Emerging from a period of uncertainty and a loss of confidence and trust, we resolved to break with all that divides us, to embrace all that unites us.  

We resolved to cure our country of the corrosive effects of corruption and to restore the integrity of our institutions.  

SECTION B: GENRES OF LITERATURE 

In this section, answer EITHER Question 2 OR Question 3 OR Question 4 Question 2: FICTION  

Below is an extract from She Plays With the Darkness (1995) by Zakes Mda. Write an essay on the extract in which you analyze the depiction of characterization and setting in relation to the theme of gender inequality. In addition to any other literary features  you wish to discuss, ensure that your essay pays special attention to: 

the diction;  

the contrast between the treatment of Diksha and her brother; 

the use of perspective to create meaning and  

the effects experienced by Dikosha as a result of the plot.

Dakota could have been one of the high school girls, but after she had completed Standard  Seven with a first-class pass her mother was unable to pay the fees. Her twin brother was lucky though, for the Holy Fathers of the church took him under their wings and made paid his fees at a Catholic high school in the lowland town of Mafeteng, even though he had received only a third-class pass in Standard Seven. After all, Diksha was a woman, they argued and bound to find a good man of the church and settle down in blissful matrimony. Radisson, on the other hand, even though he had received an unimpressive pass, showed promise as somebody who could be prepared for the work of the Lord. He was a man. 

For a long time, Diksha was angry with the Good Fathers, with her mother, with her twin brother, with herself, with everybody. But many years passed, and she resigned herself to the fact that she would never go to school.

Question 3: POETRY 

Study the poem below – “Impassable Bridge” by Mzi Mahola. In this poem, the speaker seems to explore the ways in which he and a friend of his have grown apart, apparently in terms of their priorities and values. Write a carefully worded essay in which you analyze how diction, imagery, and other features of the language are used to convey the concerns of the speaker and explore how the speaker in the poem addresses these concerns.

•  You should quote from the text to substantiate your argument. Explain how each quotation supports your statements. 
•  Do not discuss anything in your essay that you cannot relate to the concerns of the speaker. Consider the following:  the distance – either metaphorical or physical – between the speaker and his  former friend, 
• the speaker’s experience of this distance, 
• the values and attitudes of the speaker, the MP* friend, and the MP friend’s  secretary, who possibly represents the MP in the poem, 
• or the speaker’s reaction to his MP friend and his friend’s secretary.
