Section A

1. Write a short paragraph in which you explain, in your own words, why we sometimes use the word “literatures” in the plural form instead of the word “literature” in the singular form. 

2. Literature can be divided into different genres: Prose, Poetry and Drama. Write three separate sentences - one sentence per genre - defining the genre and providing an example of the genre. 

3. In Prose, there are two sub-genres called realism and non-fiction. The terms sound like they mean the same but they do not. Write two short paragraphs in which you explain, in your own words, what each term means and why they are NOT interchangeable. 

4. Write a short paragraph in which you discuss why South African teachers today should be careful of using realism as a genre for young learners in their classrooms. 

Section B

1. Write a short paragraph in which you explain what is meant by the expression, ‘poetry in motion’. Make 5 good points.

2. In poetry, we talk about the literal meaning and the figurative meaning of a poem. In your own words, explain the meaning of a ‘literal’ interpretation and the meaning of a ‘figurative’ interpretation of poetry. Then explain why it is important to deal with BOTH of these when you are teaching poetry.

3. Read the following poem and answer the questions that follow.

a) In a short paragraph, and in your OWN words, explain how we know this poem is a haiku. 

b) List three reasons why haikus are ideal for introducing children to poetry.

c) In a paragraph of about words, discuss some of the poet’s figurative language.

Explain why you think the alliteration in “still sun sets” is effective. Remember that this is a sound device, so tell us why this sound is effective given what the poet is describing here in the poem.

Discuss the words “alight” and “lit”. What is the literal meaning of these two words? “Alight” and “lit” both make us think of a certain image.

What is that image, and why is it effective given what the poet is describing here in the poem?
