Assignment Task:

Hand Calculations Engineering Convention

2 Requirements

For this assessment item, you must perform hand calculations:

1. Calculate the x and y positions of the object at t = (t2,t3,t4). Report the answer in engineering convention form.

You must also produce MATLAB code, stored as m-file(s), which:

2. Compute (x2,x3,x4) and (y2,y3,y4), where the input data are entered into your Matlab program by typing/copying the values from the data file. Verify your answer using the reported results from Requirement 1.

3. Load the data file into MATLAB (the numbers are not to appear in MATLAB code via copy-and-paste!). Verifies that the load has been successful by using MATLAB to compare the values of the first four data rows to those manually entered in Requirement 2. Display in the command window the values used in verification and a statement that you have confirmed that these values are correct Ensure that you don’t use absolute paths, e.g. <C:\Users\User\My Documents\filename.txt>, since that is not the folder in which your assignment will be marked. Use relative paths, e.g. <A1_input.txt>.

4. Plot the variation of vx and vy against time using the full set of data on the same graph.

5. Compute the x and y positions at all time levels using a for-loop. Verify your answer by comparing the results obtained at t = (t2,t3,t4) with those from Requirement 2.

6. Compute the x and y positions at all time levels using a fully-vectorised code (i.e. no loops for this calculation). Verify the answers with those from Requirement 5.

7. Plot the x and y positions as functions of time from either Requirement 5 or Require- ment 6 on the same graph.

8. Plot the trajectory of the object. Discuss the obtained results and display your com- ments in the Command Window.

9. Produce an ASCII file containing three columns: the time, x coordinate and y coordi- nate (time in seconds, length in metres, values rounded to 3 significant figures), where the task of writing data is conducted using a for-loop.

10. Repeat Requirement 9, where the task of writing data is conducted using a fully- vectorised code and the numbers are rounded to the third decimal place.

11. Have appropriate comments throughout your program.
