The purpose of persuasive writing is to influence readers' attitudes and persuade them to agree with the writer. Effective persuasion involves clearly identifying issues, anticipating and responding to objections, presenting support for an opinion, and using sound reasoning to help convince the audience. A persuasive speech is a specific type of speech in which the speaker has a goal of convincing the audience to accept his or her point of view. The speaker uses rhetorical techniques (types of appeal, methods of development, rhetorical devices) in order to help make his/her argument as convincing as possible.

TASK:

You will write and present a persuasive speech from the perspective of a character from a course text that either agrees or disagrees with ONE of the following statements:

• All people deserve forgiveness
• Identity is socially constructed
• There is justice in revenge
• Selfishness is the greatest threat to a successful society

PROCESS:

• In this task, you are being asked to apply your critical and creative thinking skills in order to complete this task.
• Choose a character you have encountered in our reading throughout the semester
• Think about how this character’s experiences would influence their opinion on this topic:
• What would the character say about their experience, feelings, motivations…?
• What evidence would the character use to justify their opinions…?
• What BIAS does the character bring to this topic? What information would they include AND exclude based on their personal experiences/goals?

REQUIREMENTS:

• Complete the planning sheet
• Select and use effectively at least two rhetorical devices/literary most appropriate to the topic and purpose and to highlight specific points.
• Your use of these techniques and devices must be clearly indicated in your script. Please highlight and address them.
• Your presentation should be between 4-6 minutes in length if it was spoken aloud.
