Aims
To analyze the combustion of natural gas for a range of air: fuel to investigate the efficiency of the boiler and to carry out an energy balance.
Equipment
A unit is a combustion unit that can burn natural gas. The gas fires into stainless steel water cooled chamber provided with observation ports. Instrumentation is provided to read:
• mass flows of the fuel and the circulating water
• temperatures of air entering the unit, exhaust gas outlet temperature, water temperatures of the water flow entering and leaving the unit heat exchanger.
• the gas leaving the unit through the chimney is sampled to give oxygen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide levels (%)

Experimental procedure
(a) Set the water flow rate to approximately 250 g/s, the gas pressure to approximately 8 mbar and the air-flow controlled to 4.
(b) Allow the system to reach equilibrium.
(c) Use the data acquisition system and the exhaust gas analyser to record the value in the results table.
(d) Note the flame and combustion conditions within the unit.
(e) Repeat steps (b) – (d) with the air-flow controller set to 3, 2, 1.5 and 1.
