The word limit for this task is between 1500-1750 not including the title page, summary, table of contents, references or appendices. Writing concise yet informative reports is an important part of being a Professional Engineer. The ability to accurately convey information in a concise, relevant and effective manner is a key skill that you should endeavour to develop. Mark penalties of 25% of the maximum possible mark will be applied for every 250 words under or over the required range (1500-1750). 

In the local context, Eastern Australia has just suffered one of its' worst fire seasons in the midst of record drought (Gourlay et al, 2020). Extreme fire risk was followed in a matter of days in some regions by record rain events. Populations locally are experiencing weather patterns that have not been experienced before and which are now impacting critical infrastructure and economic activity. 

You report is hypothetically being written to provide some background information to a senior engineer of a company you work for that is interested in pursuing new engineering technology for use in one of several possible applications related to engineering bushfire resilience/avoidance. Assume that the engineer who will read your report has a general technical background in engineering but is not a specialist in the field you are writing about. 

You have been tasked with researching and writing a short report that briefly describes some possible current or near-future engineering solutions (chosen from list below) and recommends which solution you think is most suitable for further in-depth investigation by your company. For example, from your research you may discover that there are three new/recent engineering solutions/processes commonly being used for bushfire shelters; you must then recommend which of these three you believe is most suitable for further investigation by your company and provide reasoning/justification for your recommendation. Note that there is not necessarily a “correct” recommendation, you need to provide evidence and good reasoning to support your recommendation. 

The report should be of a formal nature with a: 

• Short table of contents 

• An introduction that outlines the purpose and scope of the report 

• The main body of material that describes your research and findings 

• A conclusion and recommendation that summarises/highlights the main findings and recommendation of the report 

• It is expected that several references will be used/cited to support the findings/argument of the report and possibly some figures if they are of aid. References should be either author/date format or numbered. Reference figures unless you create them yourself. 

• Use 11 or 12-point font and suitable margins

• Bushfire resilient other structures (phone towers, electricity pylons, roads etc.)
