1 Introduction

Having impressed the township of Coonabarabran with your dispatch algo- rithm skills in Week 7’s tutorial, they have contracted you to help them once more. In an effort to become ‘greener’ they would like to reduce their effect on climate change. To help in reducing their climate change impact they are prepared to double their installed battery capacity. They are also open to installing any number of 10 kW wind turbines (which can be modeled using the generic 10 kW model in Homer). The price quoted by a wind turbine supplier is $10,000 per 10 kW turbine. Part of the assignment requires your group to utilise the Homer Pro optimiser or search space to identify the optimal number of wind turbines and battery capacity. The other system components are assumed to be fixed. Use the HomerPro file in the assessment folder as the basis for your project. Note that wind turbines produce visual pollution; produce noise pollution; require substantial civil works in the form of roads, footings etc.; and may involve disturbing prime agricultural land. The effects of these aspects are difficult to quantify. In order to take these aspects of the project into account, as well as the Net Present Cost (NPC) and generated emissions, you are required to undertake a multi dimensional criteria analysis (MCDA) on the project. You must justify, with appropriate references if necessary, any assumptions/decisions that you make in the process of carrying out the MCDA and undertake a sensitivity analysis on the weightings.

The township have contracted you to produce a report (with a maximum word count of 1500 words) that outlines/includes the following:

• the amount of emissions produced per kWh of energy from the ex- ternal grid (only consider the emissions which Homer Pro considers). Assume the grid has an energy mix of 80% coal fired power station, 10% hydro-electric power and 10% solar PV. Justify your calculations and assumptions with reference to appropriate sources. These emissions need to be incorporated into your simulation.

• a dispatch algorithm that minimises the net present cost as much as possible. This dispatch algorithm may be one of the inbuilt dispatch algorithms included in HomerPro, e.g. load following or a custom al- gorithm written in Matlab script. If you use a custom algorithm you should include your commented Matlab code in an appendix to the report. Include the following in this section of the report:

– a description of how the algorithm operates.

– graphs/figures generated from Homer Pro that highlight why the dispatch algorithm used is superior/inferior to the others consid- ered.

• the results of the MCDA including a sensitivity analysis on the criteria weightings applied

Note that no other changes to the base simulation (files located on black- board) are allowed in this assignment. The only changes that can be made are those to the Matlab dispatch algorithm (if you choose to do so), the number of wind turbines, the battery capacity, and the emissions.
