The Scenario
Proposals for the development of a cultural and restaurant precinct in a city include a building which will house an art and craft display and include a small café area. Some preliminary planning work has already been carried out and the attached diagram shows the plan shape of the proposed building. It has been determined that exposed timber should figure prominently in the interior appearance of the building, both for finishes such as flooring and wall lining, and for all structural support members. You are being asked to produce a design for certain aspects of this building.

Requirements
This exercise may be undertaken in groups of three, resulting in a joint submission. This is the preferred option; students may work individually if preferred, but there will be no concession concerning the requirements in this case.

A single submission is required from each group on Moodle, comprising the following:

i) Design of an architectural layout for the building

An architectural layout for this building is to be designed and drawn to scale, allowing for all the requirements detailed later. A one page ‘Design Memorandum’ should also be produced, which explains the logic behind the layout adopted.

ii) Design of the floor system for the mezzanine floor
Design the bearers and joists for the mezzanine floor. Further information is provided below.

iii) Design of the supporting columns for the mezzanine floor Design these columns. Further information is provided below.
iv) Design of the stairs
The treads and stringers of the stairs are to be designed. Further information is provided below.

Architectural Requirements

The attached plan shows the shape of the existing building, which is rectangular in plan. The location of the street relative to the building is also shown. The entrance to the building will face the street.
The adopted layout of the building must provide for and show the following items:

• location of the entrance;
• position and shape of a fish pond, which will include water lilies, a small waterfall, etc. Total area to be approx. (15 + X) m2
;
• position of a retail sales area, measuring 6m x 2m;
• a ‘back room’ to be used for storage of stock, a small office area, toilet and staff meals area, measuring (35 – X) m2
;

• a café area, to be located upstairs on a mezzanine level. The total floor area to be provided here is (50 + X) m2 and an L-shaped area is regarded as being desirable. Allow for a serving area measuring 5m x 2.5m. The area will have timber balustrading around it, and will be accessed via timber stairs. The position of the stairs needs to be shown. See ‘Design data’ below for further information on the stairs.
X = to be taken as your group number

Note that windows will only be located on the front wall of the building, as it has buildings in close proximity on either side and behind.
