Task
Question 1
Assume that you are a trainee engineer working for a geotechnical engineering company. You are assigned to a team undertaking Geotechnical site Investigation work for the following three projects.
a. Two storied residential building construction project on a 550m2 block of land in a residential area
b. 120 unit residential subdivision work in an outer suburban area
c. Multi level car park in the city centre
Your supervisor wants you to list, for each project,
(i) the major steps/ stages your team would follow and
(ii) the most important information you propose to gather in each of those steps/ stages.
Prepare a brief outlining the proposed work. (You may consider doing this in a tabular format, enabling easy comparison/ differentiation of information/data you propose to gather between three projects).
Question 2
(a) What are the three modes of bearing capacity failures in soil? Briefly discuss their characteristics.
(b) When estimating bearing capacity of soils, under what circumstances would the short term bearing capacity be different to long term bearing capacity and why? Give sufficient explanation to your answer.
Question 3
It is proposed to construct a multi storeyed building complex at a site. Four boreholes are advanced at the proposed locations of the buildings. Results of field and laboratory investigation are shown below.
You are required to design the shallow foundations for the building that would be constructed where the Borehole 1 (B1) is advanced. The columns loads are estimated to be in the range of 450-550 KN. The final formation level of the building ground floor should be 2.5m below the existing ground surface. Ground Water Level (GWL) at this Borehole B1 location is recorded at 5.5m below the existing ground surface.
Determine the Minimum sized square pad footing required for the column carrying the largest load. Your design should satisfy only the ultimate limit state criteria for this assessment task. Start with a footing width of 2m.
Question 4
Within the context of AS2870 Residential Slabs & Footings,
(a) Discuss in sufficient detail, effects of trees on residential buildings.
(b) What are the factors that would lead to identify a building site as an Abnormal site?
(c) When would a site be classified as a Class P (Problematic) Site?
Question 5
Your client has bought a block of vacant land at No. 805 York Street, Ballarat East. The site is accessible through York street which is a sealed road. This road makes the northern boundary of the site. A recent residential property is located on the west. (Please just use the photo and google maps to get a basic assessment of the site. You are not expected to visit the site).
Your field team has advanced two auger holes at the site, and the soil profile information is given in the attached Auger hole log (nextPage 5).
Based on this information, and using the guidelines provided in AS2870,
1. Classify the building site.
In doing this, you need to show all the steps you have followed. Show all the clauses of the AS2870 you referred to and any other resources you used. Also, provide technical justifications for your classifications.
2. Propose a suitable foundation type
Provide all the technical information and, design details. Justify with all the clauses, tables you used.
