Alkaline Conditions
1. Mild steel is typically used as a material of construction due to its low cost. It has a tendency to form passive film (Fe2O3 or Fe3O4) at alkaline conditions. Applications of mild steel in high alkalinity include reinforcement under concrete (typical pH 12-13).
1.1 One of the failure mechanisms for reinforced concrete is called “carbonation” where CO2 dissolved in the pores water leading to a decrease in pH. Using the Pourbaix diagram developed, identify the threshold pH below which the passive film is likely to become unstable. Assuming all ionic species concentration is 10-6 M and the operating potential is -0.35 to -0.4 VCu/CuSO4.
1.2 Demonstrate the changes in threshold pH if [Fe2+] decreases to 10-8M. Reactions equilibrium and Nernst equations are given below
