Letter Writing Assignment Answer

Task: This is a creative writing assignment that will require you to focus on character in the films we’ve watched thus far. For this assignment, you will write “letters” (2+) between two characters of your choice – from any of the films we’ve watched. The characters may be from the same film or they may be from different films. What they say in the letters will be entirely up to you, but their “voice” must be in line with their characters. Because the situation (i.e. corresponding with each other in writing) is made up, you have a license to add to what happens in the original film(s). Your additions must, however, make sense. From reading these letters, I want to see evidence that you understand each character’s motivations and personality. Lines from the film do not need to be quoted, nor is MLA format necessary for this assignment. I use the word “letters” rather loosely. Your characters may correspond via telephone messages, emails, texts, rock etchings, etc. Be creative!
  • To write this assignment, you’ll need to know your two characters well. Please re-watch the film or films they appear in.
  • Try to “get into character” as an actor might.
  • Try to avoid exaggeration or melodrama.
  • Make the topic of conversation (the reason for communicating) one that is in line with something that happens in the movie(s) the characters are in.
  • It’s not necessary to choose the stars of your film(s). Secondary characters, though, might be harder to imitate due to their limited lines and on-screen appearances.
  • Note that you are not writing dialogue here. These are longer, carefully thought out messages that demand some sort of response from the recipient.
  • Have fun with this assignment!
