1. Chose a short selection of the work of your chosen author. This might be a few shorter poems, one long poem or a shorter section from a longer poem, or a selection of prose extracts, or any combination of these. 
2. Then, focussing closely on the language of the passage(s) you have chosen, firstly explain (in around 500 words) why you have chosen this author. 
3. Then, in around 1000 words analyse the author's literary language and explain how this has been shaped by its cultural and historical context. Through detailed analysis of the language show that you understand the meaning and impact of the chosen texts. You will need to make sure that you look at word choice (diction), sound patterning, figurative usage and symbolic meaning and the way the form of the text influences its expressive power. 

Pay special attention to the rubric on pages 13 & 14 of the unit outline which will be used to mark your assignment and be sure to reference any secondary sources by using the MLA Works Cited List and MLA requirements for in-text citations. You must also use MLA formatting practice for your essay: this includes how to quote long passages, how to present titles of poems and shorter texts with inverted commas and how to present titles of books. It is expected that you will make good use of around 4 peer-reviewed journal articles in your research for this essay.
