Task Description

Part One – The Op-Ed

You are to write a 1000-word piece of literary journalism known as an op-ed (also known as an opinion column, or editorial). Op-ed articles are designed to influence the opinions of your reader. Present your personal opinion using evidence from the real world to persuade your reader in an authoritative and convincing manner. Emotive language, contractions and other informal language can be used, but must be considered carefully. You will not use in-text referencing in the op-ed. The issue on which you are to write must interrogate either: ? Identity :  Eg, gender, race, personal values, love, sexuality, conformity vs. identity, sanity, relationships. ? Inheritance :  Eg, family expectations, material wealth & possessions, influence, racial expectations, self-determination, physicality. ? Belief : Eg, self-belief, religion, customs & traditions, questioning beliefs, belief in what is right, personal code (ethics and morals). ? Power and sacrifice : Eg, Great things from great personal sacrifice, sacrifice for the greater good, power at the expense of freedom, social contract theory. Or another topic devised by you, with your teacher’s approval.

Part Two – The Statement of Aims

A statement of aims allows the assessor to understand your intentions. You must answer the following questions (400-600 words total) in which you will explain: 1. How does the topic you’ve studied in class link to the issue you’ve written about? Include in-text references from your novel to support. 2. How did you use language choices to influence your reader? 3. How have you used the op-ed structure to influence your reader? 4. What research have you used to support your article, and why?
