You have been contracted to design the internal wing structure for a forward-swept wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) prototype (Figure 1). Forward-swept wings (FSWs) can increase both the ef- ficiency and manoeuvrability of aircraft. They are not often used in practice due to aerodynamic divergence. For a FSW constructed with isotropic materials (e.g. metals), when the wing is subjected to aerodynamic lift (upward) loads, bending of the wing along its axis results in the aerofoil profile effectively twisting upwards at the leading edge, increasing the angle of attack of the wing. This effect in turn creates even more lift and more twisting, resulting in aerodynamic instability. This twisting effect can be reduced in metal wings by adding stiffeners, however the result is an overweight wing that negates the benefit of the forward sweep. Fibre-reinforced composite materials combined with effective laminate design can be used to produce efficient forward-swept wing structures.
