Highlights
Course Description
The course is expected to develop skills for conducting interdisciplinary engineering research including problem identification, reference researching, critical and creative thinking, idea formulation and validation, technical writing, and oral presentation. The objective is to demonstrate and communicate an ability to take knowledge from engineering disciplines to solve a real-world problem.
The final project report should be formal, with citations using an engineering journal guideline and should be of publication quality. It will be read and evaluated the same as a manuscript submitted to a journal. If the paper is well-written, it will be accepted in lieu of a formal oral/written Master’s Comprehensive Examination. The Report will be used to assess the Master’s Comprehensive Examination requirement
Project Proposal
Each project proposal should consist of the following sections:
Project Title: It should have a clearly descriptive title
Background: provide a brief one paragraph background on the project topic. The background should contain proper references (limit the references to maximum 5).
Motivation: provide the motivation for the methodology and analysis that you plan to undertake and why is it relevant.
Approach: Include possible approaches or directions that you plan to undertake to solve your problem. Also include the expected results of your analysis.
Response to Project Proposal Comments
Comments on your project proposal will be included in blackboard by February 12th and you will submit your response to those comments by Feb 22nd. You will also update the project proposal based on the included comments.
. Final Project Report
Submit a final report written in a journal format (you have to include what journal format you have used, most journals provide word or latex templates to prepare initial submissions). The various parts of the report will include the following sections: Title, Abstract, Introduction, Background, Methods, Results, Conclusions, References. The report should be within 10-15 pages single column, double spaced or 4-8 pages double column single spaced or around 7000 to 8000 words
The tenses to be used in the report are:
Oral Video Presentation:
You will submit a recorded video of your project presentation of 15 minutes (it can be a power point with your voice or you can be more creative and include other ways to present your work: it however has to be in your voice and if any copyrighted figures are used, proper citation has to be included). You will upload the video in YouTube (you can keep it unlisted so that it doesn’t appear in search results) and submit the YouTube link in blackboard.
Ada Statement: Any student who, because of a disability, may require special arrangements in order to meet the course requirements should contact the instructor as soon as possible to make any necessary arrangements. Students should present appropriate verification from Student Disability Services during the instructor’s office hours. Please note: instructors are not allowed to provide classroom accommodations to a student until appropriate verification from Student Disability Services has been provided. For additional information, please contact Student Disability Services in West Hall
Academic integrity statement : Academic integrity is taking responsibility for one’s own class and/or course work, being individually accountable, and demonstrating intellectual honesty and ethical behavior. Academic integrity is a personal choice to abide by the standards of intellectual honesty and responsibility. Because education is a shared effort to achieve learning through the exchange of ideas, students, faculty, and staff have the collective responsibility to build mutual trust and respect. Ethical behavior and independent thought are essential for the highest level of academic achievement, which then must be measured. Academic achievement includes scholarship, teaching, and learning, all of which are shared endeavors. Grades are a device used to quantify the successful accumulation of knowledge through learning. Adhering to the standards of academic integrity ensures grades are earned honestly. Academic integrity is the foundation upon which students, faculty, and staff build their educational and professional careers.
