Highlights
Objectives
This assessment item relates to the objectives of Learning Guide - Modules 1, 4 & 5 in the Study Guide.
The objectives of Assignment 2 are to:
• Develop multi-literacy skills through reflection, written communication and referencing
• Explore some of the fundamental concepts of management
• Introduce the concept of asset life cycles and maintenance financial analysis models
• Apply asset and maintenance management principles to improve organisational effectiveness
Question 1
Following review of Module 4 of the Study Guide, answer the following question in the form of a discussion:
‘Is managing the same as leading?’
In doing so be sure to outline the following aspects in relation to both managing and leading:
• definitions of both management and leadership
• fundamental elements of each
• similarities between the two
• differences between the two
Question 2
With reference to the standard asset life cycle model (refer to Learning Guide 3, figure 3-2), summarise the processes used in your organisation for acquisition of a new asset or replacement of an existing asset, with a brief outline of the complete ‘life cycle of an asset’ by your organisation (ie: cradle to grave).
In response to this question, be sure to outline the following items in relation to your organisation’s asset acquisition/replacement process.
• Show how your organisation’s asset life cycle aligns /differs from that of Figure 3-2 of Module 3
• Outline which stage/s receive the greatest emphasis by your organisation
• Are there any stages of Figure 3-2 omitted by your organisation? If so why?
• Which stages are your immediate department directly involved in?
• Which stages are your immediate department NOT directly involved in but should be?
• Does your organisation adequately consider the true cost of maintenance in their asset acquisition processes? Diagrams may be used to illustrate these points (where necessary).
Question 3
‘A significant proportion of the life cycle costs are predetermined at the design phase. This means that the design or selection of equipment and its ultimate use have most of the impact of the total cost of ownership. Blanchard and Fabrycky (1990) indicate that up to 95% of the life cycle cost of an asset is predetermined at the end of the design stage.’
Discuss how your maintenance organisation influences the cost of ownership through maintenance and operating practices. In responding to this question be sure to:
• Describe the concept of ‘total cost of ownership’
• Describe the role of maintenance management in ensuring the following:
o reasonable costs are incurred in the maintenance of assets
o available opportunities to reduce utilisation costs by influencing equipment design and/or improving equipment selection, operation and maintenance.
