Assignment Task

Introduction

This part of assignment is designed as a group-of-three-or-four project worth 20%. Organisation of this document: Section 1 introduces some background information about this part of assignment. The detailed Call for Book Chapters is described in Section 2. Section 3 clarifies what and how to submit your assignment. Organisation and format requirements of your assignment report are specified in Section 4. The marking scheme for the this part of assignment is given in Section 5 and enclosed at the end of this document.

This part of assignment relates to the following unit outcomes described in the unit outline:

1) A detailed understanding of the development of technical specifications from business requirements for computer network planning;

2) Skills to undertake planning and design of computer networks to satisfy a set of requirements specifications with particular emphases on connectivity, scalability, reliability, security and QoS; and

3) Advanced collaborative and communication skills through a group project and formal technical report.

Key technical aspects

Addressed in this assignment project include: technical details, international standards, and practice of a topic of your choice from the preferred topics to be listed later in Section 2 for the purpose of network planning.

Call for Book Chapters

In comparison with the raid development of computer network technologies, the adoption and deployment of new network technologies are much slower. This is partially due to the nature of difficulties and complexity of embedding these new technologies into existing (or legacy) networks, and partially due to the lack of general or specific guidelines of deploying the new technologies in network planning. The latter leads to the former to a large extent. While there are plenty of standards and technical specifications for network technologies, the information available is too rich to be easily understandable to general network engineers and practitioners. This makes the adoption of some of these technologies difficult, particularly in the network planning phase. A monograph that provides architecture analysis and planning would help overcome these difficulties.

For each assignment group, choose one of these topics to write a book chapter. You book chapter is expected to be suitable for readers at postgraduate level. It is expected to cover the main aspects in a style similar to that of your textbook chapters. Thus, detailed protocols and techniques may not be necessary unless directly relevant to architecture analysis and planning. This may need to do a comprehensive research of the topic of your choice, review literature, a structure design of your chapter before you start to write your chapter. For the study of computer networks, it is important to understand that RFCs are actually international standards for the Internet. Also, there are many other international standards relevant to networks, e.g., from ISO, IEEE, etc. Therefore, for computer networks, the best references are various RFCs and other international standards if available. If there is an RFC or other international standard for anything you discuss, use the RFC or standard as a reference other than citing third-party references that interpret the RFC from various perspectives.
