Fire has been called a ‘global herbivore’ (Bond and Keeley, 2005) that influences the evolution of plants and animals, the structure and composition of above and below-ground ecosystems and the populations of species. In many terrestrial ecosystems, it is one of the dominant processes shaping ecological dynamics. It is a key issue for environmental management, relating to ecological processes and human safety and property. In tropical savannas, fire is particularly prevalent. Tropical savannas comprise approximately 22% of the world’s land surface, and up to 75% of the area of tropical savanna globally is burned every year, either through natural or human ignited fires (Beringer et al., 2015).

Beringer et al., 2015) shows the average fire frequency across Australia. One of the key fire management issues in Australian tropical savannas relates to the season of fire. From the late 19th century, there was a breakdown in the traditional Indigenous pattern of fire management across northern Australia, leading to a regime of large, high-intensity fires occurring late in the dry season. This has resulted in negative consequences for biodiversity, sustainable land use and greenhouse gas emissions (Russell-Smith et al., 2013). Recent programs to restore widespread practices of prescribed burning (especially early in the dry season) aim to deliver benefits relating to biodiversity, social outcomes, and biomass sequestration (Russell Smith et al., 2013). 

 

Assignment 3 focuses on a long-term

 experiment set up at the Territory Wildlife Park (Figures 2 and 3) to measure the effects of fire frequency and season on various aspects of the diversity and structure of savanna ecosystems. The experiment uses six different categories of fire season and frequency, replicated across three ‘blocks’ for a total of 18 sites. The study was initiated by CSIRO and is now managed by CDU.
