Context

The sustainability of our environment has been a growing concern for scientists, the general public and (some) politicians for several decades. On planet earth today, we are experiencing countless environmental issues, some which scientists have been documenting for many decades – but what can be done to solve these problems? How can we use innovative, imagination and even technology to address these problems with a fresh solution-based perspective?

Purpose

Your task is to identify a specific environmental issue. Choose your topic carefully, and be specific (do not pick very large, broad topics). Before committing to it, be sure you can locate high-quality sources on your topic (these are things like scholarly articles (peer-reviewed literature), government sites, text books and NGO websites).

You will then begin to research this topic. For this assignment, you will collect the sources that you will be using for your presentation. The presentation should outline some background to your environmental issue (discussing its origins, causes and impacts). Following this background information, you should outline your own unique SOLUTION to the problem.

Presentation

Using the research you compiled, you will present your topic in a 10-minute audio recording that will be shared with the class. You can design your audio presentation like a podcast if you like – but only you are permitted to provide the voice over in your recording. In your presentation you should discuss the following:

• Provide background/context on your environmental issue: when did this topic first become noticed amongst scientists? What was discovered about this issue? What are the ecological and societal impacts of this environmental problem?
• Following your introduction to the topic, propose a potential solution. Be specific - What is your innovative idea to solve this problem? How does it work and where can you find the resources needed to implement it? If it already exists, how have you improved it?
• Discuss the feasibility of your solution, pros and cons, obstacles you will encounter and how to overcome them.
