Aim of module
The aim is to design a building which uses the least amount of energy possible to keep it users comfortable during the occupied periods over the year (considering daily and seasonal use). The design of the building must make maximum use of the opportunities offered on site, in terms of the micro-climate, local resources and social context. The energy the building does require should be used by the building as efficiently as possible and produced with renewable resources where possible.
 

Introduction
This project module provides the opportunity to test the theory you are learning in this and other modules. It gives you the chance to bring theory from many sources (be that modules, books, journal papers) on all the environmental issues (and to some extent social and economic issues) and see how these issues relate to each other.
You can think of this project as being a mirror to a real design problem where different issues can compete with each other. This module will show you how to adapt an existing design process to
respond to environmental design issues and could be integrated into your own design process in the workplace.

Episode 2 – Free-running building
This episode can be related to the scheme design stage, developing to an outline design of a typical design process.
You will work with the same site, climate and region as Episode 1. In this episode you will:

 Further develop and detail the ‘self-brief’ into an activity map
o Choose relevant indoor activities

•  Describe users (number, times, activity levels, clothing, social context)
•  Explore user comfort – and relevant comfort models - in detail
•  Describe the complexity of the requirements and prioritise issues ((comfort requirements for temperature range, air movement, humidity levels, social requirements, etc)
•  Define mismatch between user comfort requirements and available situation
•  Define specific objectives (what is needed to restore comfort)
•  Make proposals for the design of the building spaces to improve user comfort
