1. Draw a flow diagram to show your baseline product system. NB Do not just provide a GaBi screenshot of your product system; instead, draw a diagram that shows the most significant processes. Refer back to the guidelines in the LCA Workshop 2 slides about how to draw LCA flow diagrams. (10 pts)
2. Pick one impact category result (but not climate change) and discuss the results for this impact category. What processes are the environmental hotspots? Which substances contribute the majority of the results? Include diagrams to support your discussion. (350 words, 15 pts)
Some tips:
• Number and give title to each figure/table.
• For figures:
o Check to make sure each graph has label and scale for y axis
o Make sure whole label for each bar can be seen on x axis
o Put life cycle stages for wine in the order in which they occur on the x axis
o Resize the text on the graphs so that it can be read easily.
• Refer to each figure/table in the text
• Remember to include a description of which substances (sulphur dioxide, coal, etc.) contribute to your selected impact category result.
3. Produce a normalised graph that shows the results for the whole life cycle and the different impact categories on one graph – use the “CML 2001- Jan 2016” Impact Assessment method. Provide a short explanation of these results and their significance to support decisions about improvement options for the product system (approx. 300 words, 15 pts).
4. Describe three improvement options. For each one, give details about:
(a) why you selected this improvement; (b) how you modelled it; (c) the impact assessment results, and how these compare with the baseline product system (using your own choice of Impact Assessment method). Use graphs and/or tables to support your discussion. (approx. 750 words, 45 pts)
Some tips:
• If you put the results for the pre-improvement system on the same graph as the post-improvement system, it is much easier to see the scale of the improvement in the environmental profile.
• If you evaluate use of a plastic bottle, explain how you calculated/derived/obtained the assumed weight of the plastic bottle.
• The normalised results have not been weighted and so it would be incorrect to “add” them together on graphs for the whole system or for each life cycle stage.
5. What distance would you be able to travel in your car to the supermarket and back home before the carbon footprint of the car travel alone equalled the carbon footprint of all the New Zealand-based activities in the product life cycle? How much influence does the type of car have on the result? Use diagram(s) to show your results, and explain how you have done your calculations. (approx. 300 words, 15 pts).
Some tips:
• The question asks about the distance travelled. Therefore your discussion should focus on how you get to these results (rather than about the CF values per se).
• In addressing the question about the type of car, justify your choice of alternative car(s) in your modelling.
6. Attach screen shots of the plan view for your overall life cycle model, and the plan view for each main life cycle stage shown on that overall life cycle plan. On each plan have the % contribution to climate change showing for each plan/process on that plan. (No points but required as part of the assignment).
