Assignment Task

AIM:

• Perform environmental assessments of a multi-storey building design using a computer simulation program (CLO 2)
• Apply environmentally-responsible principles and technologies and relevant Australian Code and Standards to improve the environmental performance of a multi-storey building (CLO 3)

By this stage you would have already finalized, or been close to finalizing, your design in Studio Architecture. The results that you showed in Assignment 2 should have informed you in improving the design so that the building may potentially become a Net Zero Energy Building (NZEB) – once an onsite renewable energy system is applied (but you don’t have to show this).

You do not need to model every single floor of the building in detail; rather, you can demonstrate this for just one single floor for the entire building, or one small section of the building consisting of several floors. Add the appropriate materials and user profiles.

• Test the performance of the building section in terms of:
  • The indoor temperatures WITHOUT heating and cooling for a hottest week in summer and a coldest week in winter. See if you can have indoor temperatures in summer that are no higher than 29 degrees and no lower than 15 degrees in winter, indicating a design that can lead to an NZEB as the building might not need any or much heating and
    • If the target temperatures are not achieved, demonstrate some changes that can improve the performance of the building so that the indoor temperatures without heating and cooling would be as close as possible to the target

OR:

• The total energy use for heating, cooling, lighting and appliances. Find out the total energy use and compare it with the following values. What NABERS rating do you think the building might achieve:

6 Stars 50.04 kWh/m2 per year

5 Stars 100.08 kWh/m2 per year

4 Stars 129.62 kWh/m2 per year

• If the energy use of your design is higher than 129.62 kWh/m2 per year, demonstrate some changes that can reduce the total energy use so that it will not be more than this amount
• Test also whether you’ll have sufficient amount of daylight in relevant rooms where the presence of daylight is essential, e.g. bedroom, living space, office space, gallery (maybe, etc) while avoiding
• Use Honeybee and Ladybug simulations or Revit Insight for the energy
