Part A
You are required to briefly explain what noise pollution is, and its relevance to public health. You will also detail one specific source of environmental noise in an urban area, analyse the impact of that environmental noise on human health, identify a strategy used to manage that source and discuss the legislation and legislative tool/s that that are available and apply to the type of environmental noise chosen.
This discussion should form part of the body of the report and include appropriate headings and sub- headings.
Part B
This will relate to the sound level survey that you will undertake during the on-campus workshop (or off- campus with approval), which will involve measuring noise from an activity (the noise source under investigation), measuring the background noise and assessing the potential impact of the noise source on sensitive receptors. Note that the noise source under investigation may comprise multiple noise sources (e.g. a construction site may comprise noise from multiple activities on that construction site).
In Part B of the report you are required to include a discussion on:
• Choice of background noise measurement location;
• Background noise level at the measurement location (measured as LA90);
• Description of the background noise;
• Methodology followed to measure the background noise;• Choice of noise source measurement location;
• Equivalent continuous sound pressure level (LAeq) and maximum sound pressure level (LAmax) of the noise source under investigation at the measurement location;
• Description of the noise source noise, including the characteristics of the noise source under investigation and identify the presence of any tonal or impulsive characteristics;
• Methodology followed to measure the noise source;• comparison of the equivalent continuous sound pressure level and the maximum sound pressure level from the noise source to the background sound pressure level (background noise);
• Description of the potential impact of the source noise on sensitive receptors;
• Description of any mitigation measures that could be implemented to reduce any potential noise impacts on sensitive receptors; and
You are also required to calculate the predicted equivalent continuous sound pressure level of the noise source under investigation at a distance of 200 metres from the noise source location (showing full calculations) and include this information in Part B of the report.
