Heat and Lighting

The structure is south-facing, which means the light will shine through the south-facing doors when it passes in front of it. I was able to design the exterior and structure in such a manner that it filters direct sunlight during the hottest portions of the year, when the sun is highest, and permits direct sunlight during sunset and when the sun is lower in the winter months, by assessing the position of the sun data. Environmental Impact Statement

One of the materials I have used is green concrete. This form of concrete uses less cement overall and is designed to have as little negative impact on the environment as possible. Concrete currently accounts for 5% of global carbon emissions, owing to the significant amount of heat required to make the material.

However this environmentally friendly concrete uses waste and recycled elements from the industries in concrete, it aids in the disposal of industrial waste. From research I have found that when compared to typical concrete, it emits less C02, is less expensive, and lasts longer.. One of the many reasons I chose this particular material was that I wanted a durable and long lasting substance that could be depended on..

Opaque glass rain-screen cladding is another material I chose to use. The reason being was because it prevents any weather from penetrating through the building which is a big advantage as the weather in Portsmouth changes frequently. Another advantage with this type of cladding is that it consists of glass faced composite panels, thermal insulation which is very easy to maintain and in my opinion visually pleasing due to the range of colours the cladding offers, the different sizes and shapes it can come in.

Further the waste generated by this particular cladding will not add up to as much as other materials, this is because this type of glass cladding can be reused and recycled for other projects in the future as well as interior use purposes.
